Anybody know any good recordings of the Kalinnikov Symphonies. The UNT Symphonic band played the finale from the first symphony, and they had the brass from the two concert bands play the antiphonal parts. My friends in the audience said that it was just a wall of sound. I'm trying to find a good recording so that I can hear what it sounds like from the audiences perspective.

My copy is the Ukraine National Symphony, Theodore Kuchar conducting on Naxos; has symphony 1 and 2. Not bad at all.

Naxos will give you a year's worth of listening to their entire collection online for $19.95. For the amount of classical listening that I do, it's a steal.

Get the Scottish National recordings on Chandos. Bob Hughes was on bass trombone and sounds unbelievable.

When I was a grad student in NYC, nobody knew who was playing on those great recordings, so he was know as "Fang".

Dennis Fischer gave us a brief background on him. I wish that he would have been able to write more because he could have been one of the Russian greats. It was fun being in the antiphonal choir and watching everybody's faces when we came in. I think that we had at least fifty antiphonal players, including 7 tubas.
