Identify this music!

Post by ubertuba »

Another question about band music - Can anyone tell me what piece of music the excerpt below comes from?
http://www.music.duq.edu/dwnld/auditions/tb5.pdf

I hope I posted that correctly...

It was added to my audition list and I want to listen to it, but I have no idea where it's from. Thanks!

It looks to me like Schoenberg's Theme and Variations, although I don't have my part here to compare.

Can anyone confirm this? I don't have a recording of that piece, but I know where I can get one.

Why wouldn't they want you to be able to do your homework and prepare this to your fullest? It is regrettable that people give excerpts for auditions with no clue as to where it came from. This (nameless excerpts) happened a few times in college, so I asked my prof. where they came from, and he helped me find them. Its usually the band excerpts that seem to have no identification, and for me, that is exactly what I don't know enough about to just "know."

I'm glad someone here was able to help. This is why TubeNet is such a wonderful resource.

Steve

P.S. That looks like a really fun part; I think I'm going to find a recording of it...

one of the few non-march type pieces to start life as a band work, then be adapted for orchestra.

Great piece of music.

...I may be exposing my suspect memory, but I believe Shostakovich's Festive Overture may share similar origins.
