Perhaps you should also pose the question: Which smell produces the best sound? or the darker sound? Also, which type of valve smells the best? Is it rotary or piston?ben wrote:Ok - since there's a raw brass thread going on, I posed a question. What do you prefer smell wise, raw brass on your hands, or the silver tarnish smell you get?
Of course there is the cheater answer for those of you who have no experience. I'm really looking for smell preference, I don't care if you don't like either.
What smell is better? Raw Brass or Silver.

I can't cast a vote on this one! All of my horns are either raw brass or silver and I've never detected what I would consider to be a 'smell' from any of them as I keep them fairly clean. Now... I HAVE smelled some really bad lacquer! It seems as though lacquer becomes impregnated with other smells... the most noticable being cigarette smoke. I can tell as soon as I open the case whether the horn's owner is a smoker or not. What's worse is that nasty wintergreen snuff some folks use!
