i did this once to all but the shank as an attempt to stave off allergy problems. the piece still played pretty well (didn't notice much sound difference) but on the rim it was really grippy and it smelled for a while from the baking. made the allergy problem better but not a final solution. i don't know what you're going for, maybe to add colour and weight to the mouthpiece? if so, it would probably work. sound wise it would probably be similar to the lacquer vs raw brass debate.

cool. wow, i just got a wicked mental image. take a beater tuba and do it up west coast choppers style. i'd love to see a real heavy metal tuba-- flames, skulls, and red LED lights. maybe a couple lasers and a row of spikes around the bell rim. of course to be fully legit you'd have to dress like an undead viking to play it... but with the right red/orange lights and smoke effects, the ride would make a killer encore. so to speak.
i just totally geeked out. i'm going to go play iron man in the basement.

Sounds like a candidate for "Pimp my Horn" or "OverBlowin' "thedeep42 wrote:cool. wow, i just got a wicked mental image. take a beater tuba and do it up west coast choppers style. i'd love to see a real heavy metal tuba-- flames, skulls, and red LED lights. maybe a couple lasers and a row of spikes around the bell rim. of course to be fully legit you'd have to dress like an undead viking to play it... but with the right red/orange lights and smoke effects, the ride would make a killer encore. so to speak.

I never though I would see a question relating to powder coating here. If you do it, AVOID plastisol (PVC). Its smells awful, its very thick, and generally crappy all around for the process. Polyethylene is a much better alternative to plastisol. But for this applictaion polyethylene is still not great because of the thickness. Nylon or polyester is probabably your best bet, because these coatings can be sprayed on very thin so as not to disrupt the dimensions of your mouthpiece. Electrostatic Spraying is much better than a fluidized bed form of coating for this kind of application. Fluidized beds coat the metal much to thick, but for my applictaions for work, fluidized beds work much better. I strip and recoat football facemasks. But if you just want to change the color or go for a different look, I would andonize it.
