Miraphone Euph spit catcher

Post by dtemp »

So I just got my euphonium, a Miraphone 1258. It has this t-shaped spit catcher thing. I'm trying to give the horn a good cleaning (hasn't been played in 3 years), and I'll be damned if I can figure out how to get the spit catcher off.

Any suggestions?

You already said you figured it out. I assume you slide it to disconnect it from the nipples of the bottom valve caps.

I wonder if this 'T unit' would fit the bottom valve caps of a Yamaha 642? I guess it would depend on the spacing and size of the slots or openings.

Thanks.

If you're interested in getting Yamaha's valve trough for the your YEP-642, the P/N is YAC 1671P. The P/N for Yamaha's felt inserts that you place inside of the trough is YAC 1672P. These inserts help keep the moisture from leaking out when you lay the horn on your lap. I had to order these through an authorized Yamaha dealer -- not directly from Yamaha.

The only reason I was considering the 'T-type' trough above was its design in not needing the inserts and the quick empty feature.

Does anyone have any pictures of the Yamaha valve trough, that they can share?

talked to the Purchasing Manager for Brass at WWBW and he says they are out of stock, but also, that Yamaha had DISCONTINUED the item. Perhaps they came to their senses and started putting it in with the horn instead of making you pay an extra $35 to keep your shirt clean.

He's going to check on that and I'll post back and let you know what I find out. Perhaps another dealer might still have some on the shelf?

I hear an empty Bud light can works well for a spit catcher.

Here's a picture of mine without the end caps.

I had to cut about 3/8" off one end so it would fit under my YEP-641 valves. There's not as much room under the valves on a 641. Plus, I had to order 3 new bottom valve caps for a 642 to install on my 641 since the bottom valve caps of a 641 don't have nipples (I hate when that happens  ). Before I ordered these years ago, I spoke with Kurt Witt with Yamaha. He said this would work with some modification... and it did. It fits just fine under a 642 because the wraps are a bit more open.

Not sure if Kurt Witt is still with Yamaha today though.

Anyone know where to get a Yamaha 642 valve trough? They seem to be out of circulation!

I sent off an email to Yamaha asking if the the trough is still available. I'll post when/if I get a response.

Make your own:

4 1/2" - 5/8" dia. PVC pipe
2 - 11/16" rubber stoppers
Dremel rotary tool

Total cost: $21.13, including the Dremel.

Rustoleum Gold/Silver/Brass Metallic spray paint runs ~$4, if you're anal about matching your horn's finish.
