To my knowledge, the only recording that Tommy Johnson has is from the tuba conference held at USC in 1976(?). It's a live recording with wind ensemble (all LA studio musicians) and Broughton conducting. He may also have a recording of the Sonata's premiere with Broughton playing piano, but I'm not confident of that. Neither of these recordings, though, are commercially available.MellowSmokeMan wrote:Don't forget. the piece was written for Bruce's good friend Tommy Johnson. I'm sure he has a recording of himself playing it. Probably more than one.
The band recording is the first time Tommy ever played F tuba (he used Miraphone CC's exclusively before that). Apparently, he picked it up the day before, decided to try it, and practiced for a few hours with the F before playing it nearly flawlessly the next day. I believe you can hear two fingering mistakes, and zero missed notes. Amazing player and human being.
