Mahler 1

Russian Easter Ovt.

Lt. Kijie

Hungarian March

Candide Ovt.

I am convinced that 90% of the problems with rhythm, tone, intonation, articulation, technique, and overall prowess on the horn are related to air issues.

The list is kinda endless - its sometimes a lottery as to whether the piece you play really hits with the kids in the band or not - but here's a few random suggestions :-

Arnold 4 English Dances (set 1)
Berlioz Hungarian March from the Damnation of Faust
Brahms Academic Festival Overture
Liszt Les Preludes
Shostakovitch Symph No 1 or No 9
or better still
Shostakovitch Suite from the Gadfly - you don't have to do the whole lot - you can mix and match the movements
Sibelius Finlandia
Smetana Ma Vlast
Tchaikowsky Capriccio Italian or March Slave
Vaughan Williams London Symphony - its got Trumpet and Cornet parts - make sure the Cornet players use short model cornets

and.............

If you have a good string section but want to get revenge on the Trombones..........

Mendelessohn Midsummer Nights Dream - a very high Tuba part that if you get it sorted is wonderful

Have fun

A piece I have played with almost every youth orchestra under the sun is Tchaikovskys- Night On Bald Mountain, easy enough to pull off yet challenging and of course, great tuba parts. Another is Rachmaninoff's First Symphony. Not as well known as his piano concertos but it's a great part for all the brass and easy enough to do with youth orchestras.
