The music itself will tell you how to subdivide each measure. It might be in two, three, six or one. Listen for the harmonic rhythm to help you decide how to subdivide each bar.
When I first teach students time signatures like 6/16, I cover up one level of beams with a piece of paper. All of the sudden, it is in 6/8. "Oh this is easy" the students say. Then I remove the piece of paper that I'm holding over the beams and have the students play it. (Then they crash and burn . . . just kidding) That trick works well with younger students.
Which Blazhevich etude are you looking at?
6/16 ?
