When I was at the University of Arkansas, I was doubling on bass trombone. We played a blues piece by Toshiko Akiyoshi called "I Ain't Gonna Ask No More". It has a bass trombone solo for most of the piece, although I played it mic'd on the tuba. It was a big crowd pleaser. The band has the toughest part. This was definately one of the highlights of my college years.

Thing is, if it's a jazz solo, it's not written down. It's improvised. Transcribing it means it's not jazz. Jazz styled, yes, but not jazz.

Stuff by James Grant has some pretty cool jazz licks in it. I would check it out.

Local tubist and noted composer Jerry Lackey has wirtten a Jazz Concerto for Tuba. You cn get it with band or orchestra accompaniment. I'm looking at doing it later this year. Great piece - I was lucky enough to play in the accompanying band when he performed it a few years ago. It's a tough piece - and Jerry is a heck of a player.

Peace.

I play 4th tombone part on my Eb tuba in the Kauai Community College Jazz Band which is mde up mostly from adults in the community with varying jazz backgrounds.
Two years ago I found "Pennies From Heaven" & "Cry Me A River" arranged by Leigh Pilzer Who has her own web page (check Google) which were written for tuba with long jazz improvisation sections. This year we did an older chart, "Bass Is Loaded", arranged by Mike Crotty, which again features the tuba with improvisation solo sections. His arrangements can be found at http://www.walrusmusic.com" target="_blank. He has a newer piece but I can't remember it's title. You might check these out if you're interested in tuba jazz selections in a big band jazz environment.
Also, Art Dedrick did a piece for tuba & piano titled, "A Touch of Tuba" which is Dedrick "jazzy".
