Mike Roylance on PHC/ Garrison Keillor
Amid a few sprinkles and brief showers this past Saturday afternoon, Garrison Keillor wound up this season's set of broadcasts for the PBS radio show Prairie Home Companion at Tanglewood in Lenox, Ma. per his usual end-of -year extravaganza before 20,000 salivating fans there. The big feature on the program was "Old Wood and Heavy Metal" (string bass, euphonium, and tuba) from the Boston Symphony, in turn featuring Mike Roylance in a blues tuba gig, among several other appearances. What's even better was that, for those of us on the lawn enjoying our wine, champagne, and other trimmings, the showers even abated for EACH of Mike's performances -- at least where I was sitting -- and so the pickles, potato salad, and tabouli didn't get unusually soaked while tuning in to Mike. The shows are usually available on the PHC site (prairiehome.com, I think), re-runs usually happen the following Sunday (today) or the following Monday (tomorrow) over your local PBS affiliate, and often are also archived on the web site. Don't miss this one if you can help it. Lots of good humor in there, some outstanding playing, and it probably won't lose too much the second or third time around, either.

American Public Media is a completely separate entity from NPR. One is based in DC, the other in Saint Paul, MN. They are both producers of public radio content, but that's where the similarities end. APM is the distributor of A Prairie Home Companion.

I posted a link to the program in the 'who played the tuba' section before I noticed this post. Here's the link to the other post. This is well worth a listen:
