Vacation valve oil solution!

Post by TonyZ »

So, I my haste to pack up kids and sunscreen and food and clothes....I forgot to pack my valve oil. I had the horn and all my music, and a week in Northern Michigan with no music outlet close enough to warrant a trip for a bottle of Al Cass. What to do.......? In my best handy-man voice, I declared that I would go to the local ACE hardware in Benzonia, Michigan and find a couple of oils that I could possibly blend or cut with kerosene, or some other volatile combination that might launch our cottage in to the lake. I picked up the "ACE household oil" and took it home. It is indeed thicker that Al Cass, but not too much. I cleaned the valves and put two drops on the bottom part of the valve cylinder. I could not believe how well it worked! No diluting and no sticking. I did that last Saturday. I played all week (2-3 hours/day) with no re-oiling and no sticking. I'm sold, and at a MUCH lower price than Al Cass!

Just wanted to share!!!!

TZ :D :D :D :tuba:

Seems to me to be a bit lighter weight.

Still haven't had to re-oil!

I'm sure something bad will happen now. :tuba:

Does the stuff slow down your valves?
If not, kudos to you for daring to experiment.
I like bloke's idea of adding 30 weight motor oil to ultra pure lamp oil. I also oil up much less often. :D
We pronounce it Guf Coast

I'm assuming that this is the stuff we're talking about...
That's the stuff. Oiled once since vacation. Apparently the concept of a true petroleum lubricant is nothing new. Why is there "Al Cass" et. al.?

BTW, ACE was $2.39 for 3.2 oz. vs. about $4 for 2 oz. of any other valve oil!
