I'm considering a trade, should I?

Post by NDSPTuba »

Just thought I'd run this trade scenerio by the TNFJ and see if you thought it was a good idea. After going to TMEA and playing all the tubas, I've decided that I would like to "upgrade"/switch to CC. So I've been consider all my options to accomplish this goal. One way and the way I'd like to try pull this off, is through trading. So I need to find willing traders and trades that will get me closer to my goal of a high quality CC. I'm not looking to screw anybody over, but I'd like to obviously get more value from my trade. Enough of the reason, here is my potential trade opportunity.

My King 2341 for a 4/4 4 or 5v Rudy BBb, I don't remember which. Last fall, in my band, a member brought in a BBb rudy to give to my section mate to use with his middle school band ( he is a band director ). It was my first day to rehearse with the group, so I just looked on with envy and said nothing. After talking with my section mate he seems to like the tuba, but prefers piston valves horns as I do. My reason for wanting to trade, is I think he might like my king better for is kiddos in band, and I can get a tuba that has more market value than my king that I could use to barter with. And it would be a fine horn to play whilst I am pursuing my end goal of a piston CC tuba. So hopefully, we both would be getting something in the deal. The Rudy is not in as good a shape as my king, so I'd still need to see the tuba again to access the condition and all. But am I correct in assuming that the Rudy has a higher value than my king? I think they are both 80's vintage. Though my king might be 90's vintage.

I think that if you truly want a new horn, the horn you are looking to trade for needs to be something you are happy with. I say this because while it is valid to make a trade for something that may have a better market value/hold, you need to like it. Especially because, for worst case scenario, you cannot get ride of the horn and get a CC (whether for economic or whatever reasons.) Then you're stuck with this horn for a long time.

Now, I suspect that the Rudy may just plain be a nice horn that your King......maybe...depending on physical condition.

Anyway, you're getting into a risky venture. Only because of the what-ifs. If you're overarching goal is to eventually get to a nice CC, but you could be very happy with the Rudy (especially if it is a 5V), then go for it.

Wasn't there someone a while back who over the process of trading got from a paper clip to a house? http://oneredpaperclip.blogspot.com/" target="_blank

If you really like the Rudy, and someone is willing to trade you for the King, then why not? :)

Another consequence could be that you end up liking the Rudy BBb and forget all about trying to get a piston CC tuba. :tuba:
