To find the model on a Conn sousaphone look on the collar where the bell attaches to the body. You should find a ##K stamped in the metal (the ## = two numbers). Then the Conn Loyallist can help you make sure of the ID and then Musictrader.com can help you with the year it was made.

Whether the model number is stamped on the collar depends on the age. I have had or seen Conn sousaphones from different eras and some had it there while others didn't. Similarly Conn stamped model numbers on the mouthpiece receivers of their instruments, from cornets through euphoniums, for a period of time.

The model number was on the receiver, not the leadpipe, but I'm not sure exactly when they started and stopped doing this. I had a baritone horn that had "20I" stamped on the receiver and a cornet that had 80A on it. I haven't seen this on tubas or sousaphones. They were usually labeled on the bell collar, if there was one.

The 1920 version of the 40K I had the number stamped on the bell collar. (It had a 24" bell)

The 1941 38k I had also had the number stamped on the bell collar. (It had a 26" bill).
