Advice needed for Romeo and Juliet

My community orchestra has programed Romeo and Juliet for the next concert.

What can I expect from the tuba part? How about the range?

I play a BBb horn and have only modest "weekend warrior" abilities. What have I got myself into?

If you are referring to the Tchaikowsky R&J then you should start practicing a long, soft B-natural in the staff. You will need a clean attack and the pitch had better be dead-center. It's a very exposed note. You will also need to sneak breaths while holding the note, without anybody noticing. There are some spots where you can get away with breathing; just listen and learn where they are.
