I honestly don't see the necessity for equal representation of race, gender, etc. While I whole-heartedly embrace anyone who seeks to excel or enjoy playing the tuba, I don't find it a necessity to encourage others beyond their own interest. I don't mean to skew the topic or seem insensitive to equality; I just feel that it puts undue pressure, like in an infinite amount of other situations that are clear to us, in declaring that those who do not fit the "mainstream" physical characteristics should be more present. We all know numerous, wonderful musicians that are not white males. Give them praise for their merits, recognize their differences, but do not discuss their differences at lengths unless that is what they wish. It will only take away from the beauty of what they create. While I do realize and sympathize that unfairness plagues the earth, I don't find it entirely important to place labels among friends.

I hope this comes out as sensitive as I mean for it to be.
