Mr Jacobs thought the Floyd-o-phone was the best copy of the York but this was in 1995 before the YahmaYork.

Yamaha's York copy (the YamahaYork) came out around 2001, a little late for Mr Jacobs to play (he passed away in 1998).

To read about acquiring a new one, visit http://www.floydcooley.com/tubas.html, although this info may be somewhat outdated.

As of November 5, Kyle Turner had a one-year-old Nirschl York copy (Mr. Cooley's horn) for sale: viewtopic.php?t=3521.

The Yamaha is hand-made in very limited quantities and it would seem you have to be somebody to get one.

The Nirschl, on the other hand, is available, though perhaps not quickly (unless someone has one for sale). They aren't copies of Mr. Cooley's instrument, but rather are copies, like his, of the CSO York.

The Nirschl, Hirsbrunner, and Yamaha are (or started out as) direct copies of one or the other of the CSO Yorks. So, they are most similar to each other. Similar instruments include the broader ochestral grand tuba category, which includes the Holton 345 (no longer made, but intentionally like the CSO York), the Meinl-Weston 2165/2265 (inspired by the Holton), and slightly more distantly the Gronitz PCK, PT-7P, the Willson 3050, and the VMI Neptune piston model.

Then there are the converted Yorks, which may look more different but capture better the spirit of the CSO instruments. They are still being made as York carcasses become available.

Everyone has their own opinion of what the CSO Yorks were all about, mostly without having played one. Some of the copies have developed their own following, as much for what makes the different from the Yorks as for what makes them similar.
