BB Flat F Schmidt and the BB Flat PT2P

Post by HGillespie »

These two horns look alike. Are they really?

If anyone has experience with these horns, or can give me, a hobbiest, more infor about the horns, I will appreciate it. I'm considering buying a used BB Flat F Schmidt.

I believe the BBb F Schmidt is closest to a VMI 3301 which is out of the same stable as a PT2P. The old Custom site listed the PT-2P as a .770 bore and the B&S site lists the VMI 3301 as a .748 bore. I am quite familiar with the 3301 having played one extensively for the past 2 years. It produces a fine warm tone with a good bit of center core. The response is impeccible and the intonation excellent until you get above middle C, above which alternate fingerings work well. It is not a BAT however, but a very nice all around horn.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

I've played both a PT-2P and an F. Schmidt 3301, and if they are different at all, I can't tell it. I would question any published spec showing anything other than a .748" bore--a different bore would require valve sets that are not made by B&S or its sister companies.

These are very nice, and nicely made 4/4 front-piston tubas.

the bore is graduated with 1-3 at .748" and the fourth at .770" IIRC. Same horn as the PT at something like half the price.
