Willson Tubas

Post by tclements »

I played a 3050 rotary last night and really liked it. Is there anyone in the US that sells these things?

Thanks!

Small bit of history on that axe, Tony. I bought it from Dave Fedderly, who was selling it for Paul Krzywicki. It was the second one made by Willson, and was Paul's stage tuba. The first one was at his home, and used a left-hand fifth valve trigger. When I spoke with Paul about the horn, he mentioned that he felt his home tuba played a bit more openly than the stage counterpart, perhaps due to some differences in the way the horn was braced. Hated to let that horn go, but I needed the money, and have free access to a great Gronitz PCM through my community band that the college owns.

I played another rotary 3050 a few years back that Getzen had in their NAMM Show booth. Tough to make any definitive judgements in that environment, but the horn felt very similar to mine. The one difference was Getzen's axe had a bit more stiffness in the basement.

I know you've found the modified valve paddle configuration on that axe to be a bit odd, but it at least worked for my body proportions. The ergonomics seemed to be the one thing everyone railed on about prior to me buying the horn. Dave even made mention of it before he sent it out. Something to think about, at any rate. I posted a PDF showing some info on the mods:

Hope this helps...

Actually, I am finding the valve set up really comfortable. Willson should consider this mod.

It's funny, because at first glance, it looks somewhat Marzan-esque. I forwarded that PDF to Getzen. I might as well have been sending it to the king of the moon.
