I played a piece called "Norman Rockwell Suite" by Hiyato Hirose (sp?) a few years back. Fun piece.

Symphony for Band - Persichetti
I remember the first time I played it and heard the second movement...gorgeous.

I have many favorite pieces, but two pieces come to mind immediately. The first I played in Virginia All State Band back 1971 - Trittico by Vaclav Nelybehl. The second piece we played in our community band just last year - A Movement for Rosa by Mark Camphouse.

Any of the old war horse English band stuff by Holst, VW, Walton and Grainger.
Robert Russell Bennet did an arrangement entiltled "Gershwin" many years ago, just perfect band writing.
There is also a "That's Entertainment" medley (I forget the arranger offhand) but it is extrememly well written. I realize these are not pieces written strictly for band but rather are arrangments for band but they are very well written. Another example is the Duthoit arrangement of West Side Story themes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8S6f5DY6rQ From a playing aspect I don't think that it was too difficult but it did have some challenging sections. I conducted it with the university concert band so it was mostly non-music majors who just wanted to keep playing. Most of the Youtube videos I found were of HS bands. It was definitly a fun piece to work and was very grateful that I had the opportunity.ken k wrote:SoundMinistries wrote:Flashing Winds by Van der Roost has become one of my new favorites, but I conducted it as part of my TA duties so didn't get to play it.

Re: Favorite piece(s) for Band?
I'd add Gloriosa by Yasuhide Ito to the list. Big 3 mvt work with strong elements of Japanese Folk Music (quasi-Taiko in the percussion and a simulated shakuhachi piccolo solo). Much better than the better known Festal Scenes, IMO.
I also like Sparkle by Shafer Mahoney. It's very effectively orchestrated and listenable without the standard ear-clogging a-million-alto-and-tenor-voices-all-at-once band writing.
Nelhybel's Corsican Litany is a favorite of mine for younger groups.
That's all for now.

Maslanka: Symphony No.4, The DWS recording is astonishingly good.
Bennett: Symphonic Songs for band, makes me laugh every time I hear it...
Reed: Russian Christmas Music
Berlioz: Funeral and Triumphal Symphony
Mendelssohn: Overture for Winds Op.24
and many many many more...
