Just got back from a rehearsal where we read "Fantasia for Tuba and Concert Band " by James Curnow. (I wasn't the soloist). The solo was being played on a BBb (Reynolds 7/8, I think) and the soloist agreed that it should have been played on a higher pitch instrument. Has anyone here played this piece and if so what are your comments and/or suggestions?

Fantasia for Tuba
I recently performed this on a Besson EEb Tuba with the Woodland Park Wind Symphony here in Colordao. It is a pretty tough piece due to the exposed dynamics and high notes, especially in the middle section. And if you pop out a super high Bb on the last note the solo will actually cover 5 octaves.
The piece is well suited for an Eb instrument, which I believe James Curnow played as a young man in the Salvation Army - I thought I heard that, perhaps from his brother who used to direct another band I played in.
It is a great piece that challenges the entire band and is a real crowd pleaser! Good luck wityh it.
