Re: Thursday Night Concert
Well, it was different. Having a sousaphone backed up by a full jazz ensemble made it extremely difficult to hear what was going on in the solo. It's been discussed in various threaads here before about the nature of a contra bass instrument playing solo in a large ensemble. It's very difficult to hear and discern what is actually being played. And, a sousaphone, with a large bell and diffused sound in front of a jazz band?????? It would have helped if he was closer to the mic, perhaps. And, that was the first time I saw a soloist playing on a 3V bariphonium/ euphitone, or whatever those instruments actually are that we all, as teachers, had the students playing in our bands - hybrids.

Flashes of brilliance interrupting large stretches of noise experimentation. There was no question about abilities, but I did leave wondering about the choices made and why they were made.
The Army Blues sounded great, even playing stuff well outside the normal range of a 17-piece jazz band.
