There is a single D (below the staff) in the last movement that is con sord.

When I played this work, I owned a mute but did not use it. I think I would have used it were it called for. I suppose it's possible I missed the marking, but that isn't my usual sort of mistake. It has been, however, a couple of dozen years since I played it.

this is a picture of the church where we played it, St Mary's Cathedral in Newcastle. It was fun, and the acoustic was fantastic. There is one bar muted in the last movement at a forte, but so are the trumpets and trombones, so I guess it makes sense to have a mute. as it happens I did have it with me much to the amusement of the choir.

I played this a couple of years ago. There is not much for the tuba to do. There are no technical or range issues. In my copy, the Editions Salabert, the sixth measure after rehearsal 60 in the sixth movement is muted and marked forte. It is not worth the trouble to play muted. I didn't and no one noticed.
