Hey guys, so I'm looking for a new solo and some advice in picking one. My criteria is as such:
1. Driving rhythm, preferably with some lyrical lines embedded.
2. More modern
3. for lack of a better word, beastly.
So far, solos of simliar criteria that I've played include but are not limited to the Vaughn Williams, Gregson (love this solo, my favorite!), Haddad Suite, and Yorks Tuba concerto.
I really like that whole "heroic" feel. Unfortunately I'm not as well versed in tuba literature as I want to be. Any help, suggestions and recordings would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

Check out the Broughton sonata, that may be a place to start.

Triumph of the Demon Gods - John Stevens
- unaccompanied solo, but has some intricate rhythms and that "beastly" quality
if you have an F tuba...
Plog Three Miniatures = mega beast to work with

Hi!
Listen to Ken Amis' arrangement of Mozart's "Turkish March" on You Tube(sorry, I'm 48 and terrible at computer stuff). The arrangement is available for Piano accompianment, Brass Quintet, and Wind Ensemble. This should be very impressive if you can pull it off! If you find it too intimidating, buy it anyway, and PRACTICE for a year or so, until you master it!
Good luck,
Al

Eric Ewazen's concerto might be just what you're looking for!

Going by what the description describes, Laws of Motion by B.J. Brooks might work for you:

The Ewazen Concerto has always sounded pretty heroic to me.
Fun piece to play

i would have to say "Six Pack" by James Meador is amazingly beastly. 6 mvts filled with some fun stuff in there. pretty cheap, only 10 bucks-ish for the copy. the last line of the 6th mvt goes from a double Bb above the staff to a pedal Bb. i love playing it. look it up on youtube

Try Fury.
Fury is a three movement unaccompanied work, modern and it is a beast. Pretty heroic too. Most seem to play it on F but it works on CC as well. I'd bet it would be really good on a big Eb as well but I've not heard it done on an Eb.
