French horn players are equipment nerds too

Post by sinfonian »

Last night I got to enjoy a great concert by the Cor Corp (http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Cor-Corps/163826734649). They are a 19 piece French Horn Choir in McHenry Country IL. On their program under each playser's name they had the make and model of the horn that the player played. For those interetsed thed had: 13 Holtons of various models and one each of Conn, King, Alexander, Geirer, Yamaha and a Wes Hatch.

I might suggest to my local tuba/euphonium group (The Pedal Tones http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Pedal ... 8235881231) we need to take it a step further and include the make and model of the mouthpiece as well on the program for our next concert.

Why post the information about what mouthpieces you play?

The truth is, especially regarding mouthpieces, is that different mouthpieces work differently from player to player. What works great for you might be awful for me. This is also true for Tubas too.

I am fascinated by what instruments players use. This isn't because I think that if I use the same horn as Sam Pilafian that I will play like him. This is because I like to know WHY they use it. What works for them, what doesn't. Someday I am going to put together a spread sheet of all the Tubas used by major players and find connective tissue among them to try to make some magical "super-horn". Someday...

Schmid triples? Bloke, I have questions for you.
