Strange competition awards

Post by sousaphone68 »

I have just returned from the south of Ireland band championships in Clonakilty. This is more of a festival than a competition but a lot of bands enter and take it seriously the rules are more relaxed than the national championships. You prepare a 15 minute performance of your own choice with no test piece. It is a good weekend away with street performances and night time jam sessions all good fun.
We came away with the strangest award catergory I have ever heard off. Nice big silver cup for "the best arrangement" is this an award for having good taste or purchasing power as the piece was a commercial arrangement not an arrangement by a member or musical director.
The other infamous award that I have seen at marching band competitions is the "best dressed/uniform/turned out" we call it the booby prize you know your band sucked if you go home with that one.
Does anybody have similar or better weirder examples?
Cant carry a tune but I can carry a tuba.
