Meinl Weston 6460 - Kodiak

I had an opportunity to play one in the elephant room at the army conference. The biggest thing that I noticed wasn't about how it played. It was really uncomfortable for me to hold while playing and I'm not a short guy. I didn't have stand on me and that would have fixed the problem but in the seat I really had to stretch for the mouthpiece.

It's going on three years now, but when I played it, I also played a whole slew of horns at the same time. For what it's worth, I don't remember being very impressed with the Kodiak, but I do have fond memories of some of the other horns I played that day. I remember it being a good playing horn, but nothing I would call home about. I was a much bigger fan of the B & S JBL Classic and the MW 45-SLZ.

Want my main opinion on this horn? I'll make it small so as to avoid excess flak.

Try before you buy if possible, but in my opinion, there are a lot better horns for a lot lower price.

I had a chance to try out a couple at WWBW on 2 different occasions. The Kodiak is a nice tuba, but I liked the SLZ just as well if not a bit better. I would be lying if I didn't say that I found the ergonomics of both tubas to be a pain. Overall, I think I perfered the sound of the SLZ, which I think was just a better match for me personally. The cost difference between the 2 models is considerable, which is another consideration to keep in mind. In the end, both are nice tubas.

I need to make a trip up there again to try out the 2250 and the 4460.

I have never played the Kodiak.

While looking at the development pictures of the Kodiak F tuba, it seemed pretty obvious to me that the Kodiak has the same bugle and bell as the 45SLZ, but the valve section is quite different.

Intonation? A true artiste can overcome the pi$$-poor pitch of any tuba with a sound worth the effort...

Why play in tune, just get a horn that sounds good cause I can't play in tune anyway



Haven't played one either
