Isn’t that the approach Broadway producers want to take?
Aside from that this is the approach any real life provincial music educator has to go to get performable material. Knowing an insane lot of scores by heart, at least about musical quality, about difficulty, and possibly about ranges is what it takes. Learning a new score may not pay off immediately, but suddenly the occasion comes up.
There are lot of tuba relevant samples, where posters here on TN report on being asked to reinforce especially what should have been a string bass section.
