41 and counting

Ok, I am 41 and have been teaching in the public schools for ten years. Everyone around me has or is getting their masters in ed or admin. I also have decided to pursue my post bach, but I can't stand the thought of getting an Ed masters just for the sake of having one. Soooooo, with the exception of figuring out insurance coverage, what are the pros and cons of getting a MM in tuba in your mi 40's (it will be two years before I can take leave for Sab time)? I don't remember many 'older' MM students growing up. Also, anyone ever get a MM with only 1 year of residency?

I can't answer your other questions, but I know some schools only have a 1 year residency requirement... Most have a three semester minimum... You should maybe make a list of universities you want to attend and read up on their policies... That said, it might be worthwhile to look into taking a class at a school closer to where you are right now and having it transferred towards your degree. Also,at the school I am attending right now about half of the masters students are at least 35... So I'm sure you can find a school that is not only filled with 23 yr olds...

I'm 37 and just starting my MM degree but I'm going the intsrumental conducting route vs performance or ed. About half the grad students I've met so far are into their mid 30's with one over 40 (DMA candidate). Like you, I didn't start teaching until later but right now I'm just fed up with the public school system so I'm not looking for the salary enhancement, but rather after the college or private school job.
