Which Hard Case for Rudy 5/4 CC?

Post by JCalkin »

Hey guys n' gals,

I really want to get a hard case for my Rudy 5/4 CC, especially since I had it de-dented by Lee Stofer (Awesome work, BTW)

Which commercially available cases fit this horn? It doesn't need to be a tough-as-nails flight case, though I will consider those. I often carpool to gigs with other players and their stuff inevitably ends up on top of the tuba, so something a step up from a gig bag is getting to be a necessity.

Please no hypothetical "ought to work" scenarios, I would prefer to hear from those who have actually put a Rudy into a case.

Thanks!

Someone told me that if you pull some junk out of the inside of the biggest MTS, it will fit a (actually 6/4 size, as you know) tuba...but I have not tried that.
Yeah, we have the big MTS here at school, and it looks like it might work if I tore some of the padding out, but that:

1. seems like an expensive experiment, and
2. would likely negate a good bit of the case's protection.

I'll look into the Winter case.

When I had a 5/4 Rudy Meinl CC, I had a GWW wood case that was perfect for it. The case was good enough for everyday use, but I also shipped the horn in that case via Greyhound from TX to MI without any issues.

I don't know the availability of GWW cases these days (especially one that size), but I know that plain-jane wood cases were made for them at one time.

I have a Rudolf Meinl 5/4 BBb, and I have a Jakob Winter case that fits it well. I think you can find them at the Brasswind.

If you see a hard case for a Neptune, that should work. The horns have pretty much the same footprint.
Gnagey CC, VMI Neptune 4098 CC, Mirafone 184-5U CC and 56 Bb, Besson 983 EEb and euphonium, King marching baritone, Alexander 163 BBb, Conn 71H/112H bass trombone, Olds Recording tenor trombone.

I have a Rudy BBb 5/4 Tuba,
I got it to fit in a MTS 1209 V case,
I had to remove the storage box inside,
and then it was still a question of the cushion inside
"learning" the shape of the horn a little bit,
at first it was snug.
My Rudy''s bell is almost 20 inches, and about 42 inches tall
