Hetmans + petroleum = trouble

Post by tbn.al »

This should probably be in the update section since it has been covered here before. Bathed my Olds last night. What a mess! It had been petroleumized for years and I started using my normal Hetmans on top of the petromeum based oil. Bad decision. I probably got a 1/4 cup of ugly green and white goop out of it. It sure plays better. The response really opened up. Not surprising considering the goop I got out of the valve block. I now have to decide on petromeum or synthetic, and never mix the two.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Just as a little note of clarification, if one has a reasonably clean instrument, mixing standard petroleum oils and Hetman lubricants is safe. If you have a ton of gunk lurking in your instrument, Hetman lubricants will probably loosen it up and create an urgent need to clean it out. Slide-O-Mix will do the same thing to a dirty trombone slide.

I used Hetmans exclusively in my trombones and my 184 for years with absolutely no problems. This Olds came off ebay filthy and went to Joe for overhaul. He used whatever he uses to lube it up after overhaul, but when I got it home I started with Hetmans. I have to think it was the mixing. Never have had any trouble with the other horns. I really like the performance of the Hetmans so I'll stick with it after this latest cleaning and keep a close eye on it. Report back later.

My experiences have been similar: Hetmans + conventional in any combination (oil + oil, oil + slide grease (in either order of Hetmans/conventional) = trouble.
