For those of you who like to buy your symphonies in bulk, I have just previewed the Naxos set of the complete Shostakovich Symphonies with the Czech Radio Symphony/Bratislava. Everyone is quite good, including a great 3rd. The tuba player does a fabulous job with the rangy little solo in the slow 4th movement. The entire set can had for @ $35, a good investment that is a pleasure to listen to.

I also had the good fortune to preview Charlie Vernons new cd. In a word, stupendous. The CD includes the Halsey-Stevens, Spillman 2 Songs, the Ewazen, Wilder, and the John Williams Concerto. Buy it, it is an amazing testament to a great artist.
