I don't think more musicians will cone across the picket line. Most people with the skill level they are looking for have trained with people who have been in the biz. This add sends up so many red flags that people are going to stay away. Anyone who takes the job is welcoming blacklisting for life in exchange for extremely poor job security. It's an ugly situationTubajason wrote:A low piont for two reasons, one posting this on craigslist, second the number of musicians who will cross the picket line and take the job.

I agree with Ben and find it interesting that the ad even states:Ben wrote:I don't think more musicians will cone across the picket line. Maybe they need to do this by law? A bad situation regardless...Please be advised that the Louisville Orchestra is currently regarded
by the AFM as being on the union's "Unfair List." Union members who
choose to work for an orchestra on the "Unfair List," risk being fined
and disciplined by the AFM. The Louisville Orchestra does not require
any musician to resign their union membership in order to work for the
LO, nor does it require musicians who work for the LO to retain union
membership.

I am not convinced that the LSO actually posted this. I guess I find it hard to believe that they would be this stupid.

If I were a young hotshot from Asia, (assuming the blacklist wouldn't hurt them in their home country), I'd go for it.

I think you guys are underestimating the permanent and permanently growing state of employment crisis that exists among recent university and conservatory graduates. Even if nine out of ten qualified players choose not to cross picket lines for moral reasons, I bet the orchestra will still have no trouble filling its ranks with young, highly skilled players from that 10%, without even needing to hire foreign players at that.

Sadly, there will be a whole SLEW of musicians lining up to play this gig. As a lifelong Musicians Union member (joined when I was 18), this saddens me a great deal. However, in light of the current economy, who doesn't want work?

Exactly. And likewise the growing unsustainability of the century + old collective bargaining model the orchestras seem stuck in. I keep wondering how much damage to our culture we will allow before we start to question it.kontrabass wrote:I think you guys are underestimating the permanent and permanently growing state of employment crisis that exists among recent university and conservatory graduates.
