What determines the size of Eb Tubas?

Post by BassBass »

Hi Guys,

I was analyzing the height body size as the diameter of the bore and the bell of some Tubas.
I compared the models Wilson 3400, 2141 MW, with some size of Old Tubas as: Pan American Eb (medium size), Conn 14J, Buescher Eb (Medium Size), Reynolds Eb...
And I realized that the body proportions have some similarities but small differences in size of the height bell and body and of course the bore size.
I was wondering if I increased the body size of these old Tubas they would be a horn with a full sound as a Wilson or MW?
A curiosity.

Thanks

Not quite sure what you mean?
Four Eb's pictured here are (L-R) Willson 3400, Besson Comp, York Monster, York "Little".
(Note that the number of valves reduces from left to right with quite a steep drop-off at the end).
The biggest throat belongs to the bigger York, closely followed by the Besson, then fairly closely followed by the Willson.

I really have no idea of the model numbers.
As you can see, it is pretty small - bell dia. 14-15" (IIRC).
I used to have another small York Eb which had the same basic bell size and bugle taper but was much taller.
Both tubas were/are 3 top pistons.
I like how the little Yorks play - someday ill get a decent valveset put on the wee beastie.
The big York has a decent scale however the very high Ab doesn't speak (like a high pitched fart) and the low C-to-A are dreadful (but speak fine 8vb).
