Christmas playing opportunities? Some free music here

Post by imperialbari »

My Yahoo-based free-music-download project still operates, even if I haven’t pushed it much lately.

In professional contexts it is ideal when the arrangements are cut specifically for the available instruments. That ideal cannot always be met in community, church, and family contexts. When I taught in smaller communities and organizations I often wanted available and playable material, but very often had to write it myself. After my retirement I have strived to provide such material for free. Much of it is church related, and brass instruments, as all other winds or strings, will most often find relevant parts. The catch is that there needs to be a person in each group, who knows enough about balance to distribute parts optimally. Many settings have introductions suggesting how to build well sounding groups of less than standard instrument formations. The tough rule of thumb is, that if you have a large organ and/or 4 good SATB brasses, you may add just about any other selection of instruments with a fair chance of a good result.

Most relevant for the season are the several Danish Christmas carols (julesalmer). Some are very old, some have a harmonic sphere different from the Anglo-Saxon tradition, some are more mainstream Continental European. If you need some space fillers before or through services, these carols would provide relevant choices. You may find them via the index for my project:

A TN member just joined and mentioned using a G baritone in his group.

And I who thought I had been comprehensive in the selection of available transpositions. Formally there is no music for G brasses, but in most church related numbers there are versions for flute choir where the bass and tenor lines are written for G alto flute. These parts will work for G baritones.
