Kudos to Mr. Gilbert for doing the right thing! I cannot stand cell phones going off during a performance. It's almost as bad as when people clap between movements of a piece. It makes no sense to me!

Ah the age of the internets. The same thing happened to Masur in 98 during the slow mvmt of Shoshtakovich 5. He scolded the concert goer and started the mvmt over. This probably happens across the country, but some blogger posts about it and it goes viral for those interested in the arts. Folks, we are the minority and there are more important things happening.

When of the comments on the story is very good in my opinion. Somebody chimes in by asking why orchestras/concert halls don't invest in cell phone signal blockers. Although some approval might be needed by the FCC, it would make sure people don't get phone calls during the concert...

I don't necessarily think Gilbert needs to be commended for doing what any conductor, out of necessity, would have to do (and would have done) in that situation.

My question would be why people are so addicted to their cell phones that they can't leave them in the car for 2 hours?

Airplane mode. That way even cell phone addicts (like me, for instance) can have their phone close knowing full well they will receive no contact of any sort.

I have to agree with Joe on leaving the phone in the gigbag/car. That's the way I go about it, mostly because I'm scared that I'll do what this guy most likely did-simply forget to turn my phone off. It could've happened to me countless times.

So, I guess I feel sorry for this guy or girl. In a Steve Bartman sort of way.

So yeah, I'm all for not having a performance interrupted after spending good money to hear what is one of the world's great orchestras play an interesting work. But criticizing the offender and praising the conductor is pretty much shooting fish in a barrel at this point. In short, sh%t DOES happen from time to time.

Also, most people who clap between movements do so because they aren't familiar with a piece. Give them credit for showing up. The sun still rises in the East.
