Cuesnon Mouthpiece Receiver/Shank Size

Post by Tom Coffey »

I purchased an old Cuesnon three valve euphonium from an antique store. It has been a pleasant surprise so far. Although it has a nasty dent in the upper bow, it plays very well in tune, with a nice sound. It is the lightest horn to hold I have ever played, and it is very resonant. However, the mouthpiece receiver is a mystery. A Bach 6 and a half (small shank) goes in farther than it seems like it should, but actually seems to play decently. My medium shank (Besson) mouthpieces just barely fit at the end of the shank. Did Cuesnon horns actually use their own size of mouthpiece shank?

Europe seems to have almost regional tuba and barifonium receivers. 9' horns alone had small, whatever you have :D, English medium, German medium, large, and probably something even bigger.

Does the Bach seat solidly?

The Bach I mentioned in the original post is a small shank trombone/baritone mouthpiece. It seats solidly, but looks like it goes too far in. I also tried a small shank Brian Bowman BB1, and that shank went in even further. Intonation was not as good with the BB1 as with the Bach, and the tone seemed to lose a lot of overtone zing, so for now, the Bach it is, even though it is a little bit small for my usual taste.
Any Cuesnon afficionados know what would have come with it?

I can easily make a shank to fit it, with one of my mouthpieces in whatever size you want.

If it seats solidly, and you get good tone and intonation, go for it and don't look back.
