Looking for an old tuba stand

Years ago, SOMEONE use to make tuba stands. They were heavy and large tripod type. They has little felt bumpers on the U-shaped supports. Anyone have one of these old things that they's like to ship out? Thanks.

Yeah that's it. When I tried to bid, I had been out bid. Forget eBay. I shoulda known better. Anyone out there got one they REALLY want to sell?

You're mistaken, at least about that design being available new. Not sure if that was the original tuba tamer, but it sure does look like a converted snare drum stand, and I can't look at it without picturing expensive nightmares with the swivel not being able to hold the weight of, say, a Hirsbrunner.

Hi Tony - I have one of these sitting around - I replied to the same post on the "For Sale" forum - anyway, if you'd like it, I'll try to get a picture this weekend - it's a bit rusty/old, and you can decide if it's worth anything to you.
I'm located in San Diego County - so the shipping shouldn't be too bad, even though this thing is a lot heavier than it looks.

I've got one of those, too. The old felt padding is hardened, and I use a thick towel in it. It holds heavy horns well. You could push it over, but you'd have to really bump it.

I found mine about 15 years ago in the basement of the local music store, (now long gone.) It's the exact stand your photos depict, although it has no identifying marks on it. When I asked if the owner could get me a stand that I could use for my tuba while doubling on bass bone he got a funny look on his face and said he thought he might have one. Ten minutes later he was back with my (albeit dust covered,) jewel. He said he'd had it for years. I offered $50 and we settled for $60. I use it for my Mirafone 186, and wouldn't sell it for five times that. (Sorry Tony.) I only wish I could find a stand that would hold my Yamaha 621 as securely as this does the 186. I've tried to make the Hercules work, but it just isn't there yet.
A caution: Your axe in ANY stand is in harm's way. I learned that one the hard way. And now, if I'm not on stage with my horn(s) they are in their cases. Period. People don't mean any harm, but if they knock the stand/horn over you're going to be sick never-the-less.

I got one, but it's the low end kind and not very sturdy. It doesn't really hold the horn securely. I use it as a door stop....

Tony's stand is called a Buck Horn Tuba Stand. Find a music store that has access to a Harris@Teller music products catalog. In the early 80's a local music store ordered one for me ($125 I think). The only problem was the vertical arms that held my 20j upright were made of a very soft metal and couldn't support the horn very safely. I remedied that by having a shop weld small supports underneath the arms, after that it held the 20j very safely. In the 60's I had an old Buck Horn stand that was made with a much stiffer metal that didn't need reinforcing. If you can find an old one, it probably be adorned with some rust as people are pointing out. Good luck in your search.

Thanks for the clue. I spent a good part of yesterday afternoon talking by telephone to a number of prominent tuba players, each referred me to the other, all over the country, and the search wound its way eventually to woodwind and brasswind, where I have already exhausted their ideas, and to The Horn Shop, every helpful but no stand, Kanstul who made the straight bell for my 20J. I even found my old high school band director to see if he could remember who made the stands we had for the sousaphones 50 years ago!

I wonder if there is a market for a sturdy, portable stand, on rollers, like what we had for sousaphones? It's not exactly rocket science.

It would be interesting to put rollers on a Tuba Tamer. I use mine to store my heavy King. It is very stable.I used the "Tamer"outside for windy gigs. My horn has a recording bell and a head wind is a major challenge. The "Tamer" is so heavy I never had a problem.
