Playing and the neck

Post by ConnGirl »

Hey all!

Although I have been playing horn lately and not tuba, I am assuming that this would be similar regardless of the brass instrument.

I am wondering if anyone has experiences with thyroid needle biopsies, and how those might have an effect on playing? I have one scheduled for the 15th - she wants to biopsy 4-6 nodules, which could involve the use of 20-30 needles. I've read that the worst side effects are swollen neck and lips, and difficulty breathing afterwards. I have a dress rehearsal for a very long show that night, and am wondering if I should change the date of the procedure because I'll be out of commission!

Any advice is appreciated - thanks in advance! (:

I'm no MD but I don't think I'd want to do something like this shortly before an important rehearsal, unless my doctor was urging me to hurry up and have it done, for some reason that would jeopardize my health if I waited. If you can afford to miss the rehearsal go ahead with the procedure.

Either way, I'd say put in a call to your doc with your concerns and ask if waiting would be risky, if you haven't already. Be pushy or even a little rude if you have to--it's your health and your money, after all.

I wish you all the best,

Talk with the physician who ordered the biopsies and explain your situation. Unless he/she believes that time is absolutely of the essence, I can't imagine that he/she would object to rescheduling your appointment.

By all means, reschedule. It takes time for you body to heal after these sort of events. Wait until after this performance. DAMHIK.
