You quoted me so fast, that my error of east-west wasn’t corrected yet.
The bridge seen is for cars and forms the above-water eastern end of a complex also encompassing a railway tunnel to the east plus car and railway low bridges to the west. I played in the local railway band at the opening of the tunnel in 1997 and at the arrival of the last car-ferry in 1998.
The high bridge hasn’t been rammed by ships, but a Russian ship rammed the low bridge maybe 10 years ago. They had used a pilot out of a harbour a few hours before. The pilot hadn’t noticed anything odd, but when he left the ship the drunk first officer came out of his hiding, took the watch at the ship’s bridge, started the auto-pilot without setting it right, and fell asleep. He didn’t survive the collision with the low bridge. So we are very attentive about ships’ potentials for damaging our bridges.
