In praise of early-mid '60's 4v CC Mirafone 186 tubas

Post by bisontuba »

Hi-
Before some gigs yesterday, I stopped by the music hall for the Buffalo Philharmonic to hear a rehearsal of a 'Fantasy Camp' the Orchestra was having with folks both locally and from around the country who paid--for a one day 'camp'- to rehearse, be coached, have meals, play a concert, etc. with the Orchestra last night. Mike Lynch came in from Texas and he and Don used old 186 4v CC tubas from 1962 and 1965 for the rehearsal/concert. It was great to see Mike and just sitting in the Hall and listening to those wonderful old Mirafone sounds really made me remember for the umpteenth time just what great horns those mid/early 1960's 4v CC Mirafones are!
The NY/Mt. Vernon Bach trpts., old Conn 8-D's (series 'M'?), old Conn 88-H trombones, and these Mirafones really have that 'beautiful, classsic' sound. Just my 2 cents worth...and enjoying the sound in my head of those old 186's...
