Name That Fuba

Post by J.c. Sherman »

I was enjoying a nice morning listed to the Scherzo from Bruckner 4... and I saw this tuba at the end of the video. I'm stumped. The rounded 5th crook (but modern placement), narrow bell with shield... What the hell is it?

The player is from the Staatskapelle Dresden... 1981 in Tokyo.

Early B&S or predecessor thereof. With that huge throat I wouldn’t call this bell small, but there isn’t much flare. The old bell style and the S-links seen in a top rated, within the GDR, orchestra point towards an older instrument.
