Hi, if I wanted to buy one valve for a tuba, about how much do you think that would cost new? I'm thinking about buying a tuba from someone but one of the valves is missing (King Tuba - 3 valve).

Andy should know, but I remember hearing a quote for about $300 for a piston made to the specs of a horn. I imagine it would be lots less if it were one that was in stock at Allied or from the manufacturer. If it is a King 1135 or 1140 they are still available new, so the valve should be available as a replacement part for signifcantly less than $1000. If it is an older model it's a much bigger question mark. Check with your local repair person.

Post a serial number and model number. Also the diameter and length of the piston. Make sure you have a line on a piston before you buy the horn. Kings are pretty common but parts are getting harder to find every day.

I ordered a set of brand new pistons from allied for my old old (20's as I recall) 4 valve front action Conn euphonium, and they fit perfectly. They came without valve guides, but each piston fit like a glove. It was probably a fluke...

It was a fluke. Try ordering a set of pistons for a Conn 14i baritone! Last I knew (about two weeks ago) they only had 30 or so 2nd pistons and no 1st or 3rd. When they're gone.... they're gone.... as Craig Anderson at Allied stated. Most of the pistons that are available are simply 'new old stock' and in some cases (as in the 14i) are used pistons. Get 'em while they're hot!
