Buzzing Noise on my Horn

Post by Ansarum »

Hello all,

I've recently encountered a problem with my Getzen bass bone.

Most times I play a note using the F-attachment such as an F below the staff, there is a buzzing noise coming from somewhere on the horn

I can't for the life of me seem to find the point at which it is coming from. My first thought was the screws on the triggers themselves, but no dice. :(

If anyone has any advice as to where the buzzing/vibrating may be coming from, let me know, I am at a loss as to how to fix it.

Assuming everything on the horn is properly lubricated (Everything!), and you have tightened everything that can be tightened...

....it'll likely be a loose solder somewhere on the horn.

You'll need to check pretty much everywhere on the valve section. As mentioned above, play the appropriate notes and get someone to feel around the valve section. This might locate it.

Otherwise, another good option is to take a blob of an adhesive such as blu-tack (or similar poster/wall adhesive), and just place it on random solder joints while you're playing. When the buzz stops, you've found the right spot.

That having been said :| , when I could find NO loose solder joints or NO rattling moving parts or NO fault with spring barrel springs on a trombone bell section, I fave discovered that SOMETIMES when the bell flare gets knocked (bent) towards the rest of the bell section, the large cross brace (as they are rarely soldered all the way across) can get mashed in so as the post in the center of that large brace flange can vibrate against the bell.
Bloke, that's friggin' brilliant. You might have solved a real conundrum for me (a Conn 62HCL).

Otherwise, OP, analysis here won't help much; usually it's solder or screws, but also levers can rattle and 1,000 other things.
