another VW research post - help needed

Post by Arthur plays tuba »

Hi Tubenet,
I am trying to do a short paper on the VW concerto, and with some search through the forum archives there are some really interesting discussion on how the first performance by Mr. Catelinet deviated from how VW originally intended the solo part to be. Any advices to look for different versions available in print? I am only able to get hold of the OUP version in red cover, and the Eulenberg version - wondering are there any other versions out there which i can study and make comparisons.

I am also aware of several articles quite often quoted in this site and would like to seek for advices here on how to get hold of a copy of them:
- Reed, David. Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto: A Retrospective Look Upon It's 25th Anniversary. TUBA Journal 7 no. 2 (1979): 13-15.
- Skip Gray: Performance Considerations in the Vaughan Williams Concerto for Bass Tuba, from the TUBA Journal ~1986

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

JSTOR/Ebsco searches are usually a good starting point to finding articles (not sure about TUBA journals in those systems); if that fails, search WorldCat.org and then the ILLIAD program (Interlibrary Loan) works wonders - usually fast and friendly service to boot.

Are you able to purchase old copies of the TUBA journal through ITEA? I can't remember if that's possible, or if it would go that far back, but could check that out. If I'm talking nonsense just ignore me - must be turkey drunk.

Good luck in your search.

Roger Bobo has discussed this matter on his website, suggesting that many of the phrasings and articulations vary considerably between the original conception and the printed version; to say nothing of the notes. He would also be a good source to consult.

If you have a library with access to ProQuest/Academic Search Complete, you should be able to find the 10 000 dissertations on the VW tuba concerto.[*] From the dissertations you can find lots of information, but you can also find lots of great sources by "pillaging" the bibliography. You might be able to look at what precious authors looked at and you might find more information in the other sources that wasn't communicated for one reason or an other.

The ITEA journal is not in JSTOR. You'll have to find a library or an individual who has the previous copies or access to online copies. (I think the online editions only go back to 2004)

*There are like 20 different dissertations on the first page of results.
