Searching For A King 'Pit' Tuba In Texas

Post by Dan Schultz »

Word is that there is/was a King 'pit model' tuba at a school in West Texas that used to show up at the state solo and ensemble contest each year. The story is that the best tuba player from the school got to play it. Only a handful of these horns has been documented and it would be interesting to locate this one, too.

Any educators in Texas have any information?

King recording bass. (Which IS a pretty good horn come to think of it).
Brian... My post is merely a question of "has anyone seen a 'pit' model in a West Texas school and wasn't meant to stir any controversy regarding how the horn plays. I own one. ... as well as several King recording basses. I know how they play.

I saw a pit model on some website recently, maybe a tubachristmas site somewhere. I'll have to retrace my browsing sometime soon.

In the same vein, Don Butterfield once told me that he donated his King Pit Model to his old High School in Centralia, Washington many years ago. I wonder if that horn is still in circulation in the school district?
