I have misplaced my copy of the Broughton and I'm working it up right now and I have a lesson on Friday. I have a replacement ordered and on the way but I won't get in until Saturday. Is there anyway someone could PDF me a copy of the first to movements? If so, you can shoot it over to cmro225 at gmail dot com.

FYI - Asking for a PDF/scanned copy is illegal. I would be cautious to ask for things like that in a public forum.

I must say I doubt this very much. But maybe I am wrong and I am curious. Can you show me where in here it says that merely making the request is already an infringement?

Okay, you got my there!!!' Yes, asking isn't illegal, providing the copy is and having the copy (which will most likely be printed is)

Missouri - the situation you describe in that he ordered it only makes his situation legal IF he obtained permission from the publisher. I have been having many many copyright discussions with folks lately and (I don't and won't make time I post them) have read the legal work regarding this.

I'm merely pointing out that in this day and age you can never be too careful. If I was the OP I would refrain from asking a favor in a public space that implies I or another will be breaking the law.

I respect the intent of this law, but it is really oppressive in many circumstances. If I lose page 3 of a solo that I have purchased once, why should I have to buy an entire copy of it again. I face this all the time with band arrangements. If I spend $100 buying your arrangement and kids walk off with all the first trumpet parts, would you really expect me to buy the whole arrangement again just to get those parts? It is not like some who try to get away with not purchasing it in the first place.

Here's an excessive analogy, but: if I were to misplace my car, should Ford give me another for free? If I'm grilling a steak and drop it on the ground, should the butcher provide me another?

Nevermind, it's been a long week and I'm tired. And dizzy for some reason. Anyway...

If I lose my copy of a piece, I curse myself and buy another, since it was my fault. I get my parts back from my band kids. That's my responsibility. The part of copyright law that irks me where sheet music is concerned is buying a piece, and not having enough parts included for my band, then I have to buy another copy just for a few parts. This especially stinks if the parts are not sold individually and I have to buy a whole second set just to get another 3rd clarinet part.

Fact is, whether we agree with copyright law or not (I happen to not agree with some of it, and agree with other parts), law is law. Disagreeing with law does not hold up in court as a valid reason for breaking it.

Here is my last lecture on this thread:

If you have an important piece of sheet music that you absolutely cannot afford to lose, make an archival copy of the music. Do not put it in the same place as the original.
