Nobody has asked this yet:
Where do you live?
I've had students mow my lawn and weed my flower beds when money was tight.
That's how I paid for lessons 8th-10th grade.

Man y'all are replying this quicker then I thought. I thought after the 2nd page tjis thread would die boy I was wrong.
Anyways, might have came off a bit stubborn so ya, like I said earlier,my apologies.
I live in Texas. Where, well if I really have to tell y'all, then I will.
Hm, what else to say, lessons, they will probably come some where later down the road. Ya.
So in class today, was playing, director said Tubas were too loud during warmups and all. Nothing about blatting or making uncharacteristic sounds. So hm, looks like I sorta of getting the hang of. Just focusing on taking huge breaths. And moving lots of air. Apparently I have realized(my director has gotten on me about it as well) that I loosen my jaw at times which therefore makes everything Flat. Gotta work on keep my embouchure tight(well not so tight I can't breathe lol, but just keep everything in place). Any tips on how I can do that?

I figured it was Texas based upon the "WOHOO MARCHING BAND" plug. Lol
I remember my days on the blacktop parking lot with a sousaphone at 110° in the West Texas heat…it sucked.
I'm in dfw…if you live nearby and want to mow my yard for lessons. PM me.

Re: Hello guys and question
Nope. And taking my instrument home only to have to bring back the next day is sort of a hassle. So I practice at school unless we're on extended breaks like Winter break or Spring break or something like that. Then I take it home. Thanks for your tips though. I'll try to focus on that, a long with my loud playing. Best of both worlds haha.goodgigs wrote:Well, I thought of another thing I didn't tell you before: your jaw my not be the issue by itself.
When your jaw drops maybe your mouthpiece moves down too. Also what really maters most is
the corners of your mouth where they show outside the MP. They shouldn't smile, they shouldn't frown,
they should stay neutral most of the time until you peddle of sing in the soprano range.
Do you have a horn at home ? Playing right now would be better then typing !

Well, if it isn't already obvious, TubeNet is a very strange place. Take a lot of words with a grain of salt, and remember that it's all in good fun and making funny noises into the mouthpiece . Music is an art of sound.Tuboss2 wrote:Man y'all are replying this quicker then I thought. I thought after the 2nd page this thread would die boy I was wrong.

Be careful listening to Texas band directors about tuning, too. That's the crowd that tries to tune the whole band to a concert F.

Re: Hello guys and question
Actually, I have students who play football and are in band. They march the halftime show in their football uniform. The only time you will see them in a band uniform is for marching competitions.Missouri wrote:I have heard Texas is a state where high school football is a major sport. I find it hard to imagine a coach allowing a player to play half time, and would have time to change into a marching uniform and have time to change back into their jersey.
Now…in regards to football: Unless you've lived it—You'd never believe it. I grew up in West Texas (Abilene) during the "Friday Night Lights" era. Odessa Permian used to come kick our tails up and down the field with their JV team. J.R. McEntyre cliniced my high school marching band one time. He didn't use the longranger—he just yelled from the tower.
Secondly, if you've seen the movie, "Friday Night Lights": During the Abilene High game it's September on the movie and people are in long sleeves and holding blankets. That's Hollywood glamour. It's still 90+° until the middle of October most years.

Re: Hello guys and question
Yo guys. Just thought I'd update. Sound is really learning to carry out to the auidence(or front of the band room). Looking good. Now just got to work on control and not let the timbre distort. Because if I do I'll get that blat sound I'm trying to avoid(for concert band, in marching band, let loose yo!!)
But ya thanks for the advice guys. If you guys have anything else to say or want to suggest something else to this topic, please do so! I read this topic every night to see if anything new is posted. If I have any questions I'll be sure to ask you guys. Thanks again!

Re: Hello guys and question
How is Permian's band nowdays? When I saw them in 1977 I thought they were the most remarkable program I'd ever seen.

Re: Hello guys and question
Wow, I find it interesting that there are people out there that have never heard of football players in marching band. But it's probably a culture thing. I went to high school in southern Oklahoma at a high school with a graduating class of 32 and an overall high school population of about 110. We had to scrape for people to play in the band. The largest I ever saw the band was 44 members. That was my seventh grade year. I moved up the next year to high school, but we had a director for a long time who built up the program. The year before I started marching we got a new director who was not just a horrible director but a pretty terrible person as well. After one year the band dropped from 44 to 19 members. It was really sad. My senior year the band only had 16 members.
