For Janáček's Káťa Kabanová will I want:
Bass or Contrabass tuba?
Good book or time-in-the-practice-room?

I believe I played this in my college days. As I remember, you will probably use a contrabass tuba. Its a decent part, some loud aggressive playing for the low brass section. If its the piece I'm thinking of, it may have a very brief muted section that won't be heard in the context of the music anyway.
