Meinl Weston 3 piston BBb tuba?

Post by Larry6153 »

Is anyone familiar with a Meinl Weston 3 piston BBb tuba?
I have been unable to find any info on it. I am going to look on Sunday and would like to do some research in the mean time. The owner says the model is P589, but I can find nothing using that. It is top piston,14in bell, and 34 in height.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you, Larry

This is probably the model 10. It's a 3/4 similar to the king 1140.

I agree.........most likely a model 10 which is a 3 valve 3/4 BBb tuba.
There is not very much online about early Meinl Weston tubas (especially the smaller ones)
Here is a site that lists them by model number.

I have a friend who has a model 11, which is the same tuba with a 4th valve. Yes, it is a 3/4 tuba, but a very good one. Probably the best 3/4 tuba out there. My friend is primarily a bass bone player, and uses this tuba for doubling in small ensembles. Very even tone and intonation.

Thank you all for your replies. The info is very helpful. I am an upright bassist and want to imitate a tuba player on some tunes in our band. It sounds like this might be just what I need for that.
Thanks again, Larry

I suggest something like a Conn Helleberg 120 mouthpiece to start: reasonably inexpensive; not too large a cup diameter; a standard mouthpiece which is also copied by several other less expensive makers; the cup is deep enough to bring out the fundamental while retaining good overall tone on such a smaller tuba.
