"Tech-oil" for your valves

Post by sugawi »

Anyone has experience with "tech-oil" on your instruments? Some trumpet players highly talk about it. But what makes me hesitant is the claim that you can oil your horn once in 2-3 months :?:

I've noticed in my ventures that valve oil really doesn't matter all that much. If I could say there's a "best" I would put my money on Hetman's. I know people that primarily use lamp oil and motor oil On their horns. There really isn't too big of a difference between local music store brand valve oil, and hetman valve oil. That being said, I do buy high viscosity rotor oil for my early 60's mirafone 186, primarily because all the mechanics are loose and old, and it fills in the gaps quite nicely. Makes the valves a little quieter too.

Also, I too know some trumpet players that speak highly of that valve oil you're talking about, but I don't think I've ever met a tuba player that uses it for some reason. Hopefully that answers any thoughts or questions you may have had.

I used Hetman on my trumpets, cornets, and a flugelhorn for a number of years and still have it on a couple of them. Never had a problem. But when I used it on my tuba I got the green slime that some other people have commented on. I don't have any explanation why this seems to be a problem for me on a tuba but not the other instruments. But it does indicate that oils that are appropriate for some instruments may not be right for others.
